Mr Monopoly

Mr Monopoly

I stand with the trees.

In a time where nearly everything is political, so is my art. I hate the feeling of helplessness, of constantly asking myself what I could possibly do to help. The conclusion I’ve come to is to raise awareness through my creations, and hopefully leave room for hope to come in.

All I can do right now is create, and create I shall. Here’s an excerpt from a song I am writing about profiting off the old growth trees in Canada, and the immoral profit off of mother earth in general really.

A reference you may take note of in this song is “Lonely Doug.” I am referring to Big Lonely Doug, a Douglas-fir tree in British Columbia. He stands alone in the old-growth forest, surrounded by clear cut trees that were once as glorious as he. I would encourage you to look up the story of this tree after reading!

Mr. Monopoly

Pursuit of profit rots your bones,

Your morals died when you were throned,

adorned with luxuries you can’t afford.

Your greed, it leaves a paper trail.

Contingencies in case you fail,

and assets that can buy your way to Mars.

So we’re blocking off the logging roads,

But you keep stealing wild homes,

And claiming land that wasn’t up for sale.

Left Lonely Doug among the dead,

You amputated all his friends,

Then left him there to prove your empathy.

Mr. Monopoly,

Won’t you spare one tree for me?

The embers will remember your folly.

Mr Monopoly,

See the forest for the trees.

And promise me it doesn’t end this way.

You think you own what you can see,

Ownership as currency and

Get rich schemes to help move you along.

You count your sheep before you sleep,

But dollar bills are all you see,

You tell us all to dream of what’s to come.

But how would we get any sleep

If at my age we’re meant to keep

Pace with all the milestones you’ve made?

Minimum won’t pay the rent,

So we’ll just suffer in silence,

Cause you say that you walked uphill both ways.

Mr Monopoly,

See the forest for the trees.

and promise me it doesn’t end this way.
